The execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana must be halted and an official moratorium on capital punishment established in India, Amnesty International said in an open letter to the country’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Balwant Singh’s execution is scheduled for 31 March 2012, in Punjab state.

On Friday 2 March from 13:00-16:00 and Saturday, March 3 from 09.30-12.30 there will be for these two caught a signature campaign at four places in the center of Hoevelaken. Volunteers from Amnesty Hoevelaken, Women and Youth Project now stand at Jumbo Grace Home. Lidl, Albert Heijn, and Laak Stag by asking shoppers to sign letters. These letters are addressed to the authorities of India and the Indian Embassy in the Netherlands. It called for the release of two Indian activists. In the past held petitions from Amnesty often have positive results. Each letter is a Euro asked to contribute to the postage. करतम जोगा आदिवासी नेता हैं ! छत्तीसगढ़ सरकार ने इन्हें पिछले दो साल से जेल में बंद किया हुआ है ! क्योंकि इन्होने सलवा जुडूम के खिलाफ सर्वोच्च न्यायालय में याचिका दायर की थी ! अभी जब इनकी जमानत के लिये हाई कोर्ट में आवेदन किया गया तो सरकार ने जवाब दिया कि ये तो ‘फरार’ हैं ! जबकि वो सरकार की ही जेल में बंद हैं ! इतनी भीड़ में शायद सरकार भूल जाती है कि कौन कहाँ बंद है ?

Kartam Joga’s bail application is up before the High court in Chhattisgarh. He has been in jail since Sept 2010. The government is apparently claiming that he is absconding!! CG has so many people in jail, they can’t find them!

Sure Binayak Sen Is Free, But What About Kartam Joga?
In Chhattisgarh and other parts of rural India violence between armed Maoist insurgents, state-sponsored militias, and government security forces have resulted in increased hardship for local residents, mostly poor adivasis. Dr. Sen and other human rights activists have struggled to provide services to locals and highlight the human rights abuses they suffer, often at great risk to their own lives and livelihoods. Take action now to call for the release of Kartam Joga, another human rights activist jailed in Chhattisgarh for his criticism of the state government and advocacy on behalf of civilians caught in the conflict.
Amnesty International puts out a statement supporting recent Supreme Court decision.
Members of the Indian army must stand trial when facing charges of serious violations of human rights, instead of hiding behind the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), Amnesty International said today.
On 4 February, India’s Supreme Court stated that the Indian army could not invoke the AFSPA to avoid the prosecution of eight officers charged with the March 2000 killing of five Kashmiri villagers at Pathribal.
